Soooo lucky

I have spent the last few days in torment!

I was made aware of the most stunning young lady who at 18 weeks was in need of a new home through absolutely no fault of her own. To say I was tempted was no understatement but head managed to rule heart and I am pleased to say that she has a new home - not with me Very Happy .

So poor Brice is not able to welcome another deerhound into the household - he would love to have something other than gundogs to play with, it is almost sad to see him immediately gravitate to other sighthounds whenever he gets the opportunity.

So I will stay at 3 dogs for the moment and see where the brittany future leads me ............................... but if anyone hears of a deerhound or deerhound lurcher needing homing (bitch only) then let me know so I can assuage my guilt always putting the gundogs first in my life.

Sue, I must be honest here.  You have three boys, all different breeds, and at the moment all getting along well.  If you take a bitch of ANY age into that group you will have problems. No matter how well your boys get on just now their hormones will take over.  Play fighting will become serious then it could turn into war.  It's up to you, but I wouldn't even have three males in the same house let alone add a girl to that mix.  Just my opinion, of course, others may not agree. Annie - I no longer have three 'boys' in as much as I have castration to factor in and my behaviourist friends all feel I need to go back to have a bitch to rule my boys.

In the past I have always had at least one bitch and never 'wanted' to get to the point I had recently where I had 5 entire males. Also of course one lad is kennelled 24/7 so he is out of the equation as he doesn't 'do' family as such.

I do hear what you are saying however and won't be upsetting the applecart for the sake of  Wink .

Well if the behaviourists say it's OK then it must be.  It's just personal experience that makes me think otherwise - and I've never found that castration makes a lot of difference if there is any natural dominance in the first place.  So you only ever have two boys in the house now?

I find this most interesting.  I found that Barley - entire male - held the ring over several other males and mature bitches.

The thing about a bitch is related to MY boys and how they all interact in mixed sex groups not a overall blanket statement.

Annie, Piper has never been comfortable living in the house - saying that he does come in and settle for short periods but he always returns to his kennel when he is ready. The longest time he has stayed indoors was about 3 hrs then he wanted his space again.

We've always had dogs and bitches together with no problems.   When we got our first Weimaraner we were told you could never keep 2 males together - we had no problems!   We've always found our boss has been a bitch - Rosie is now in charge having taken over from her mother Very Happy

That wasn't exactly what I meant.  I have a dog and two bitches, plus a monster (Hester) I have no problems, but I DID have when I had two MALE Brittanys and ONE bitch!  I have had two males and two females without any problems too.  Perhaps you need to get three females, Sue - to keep an even balance Laughing  Laughing  Laughing  Laughing
