Stair/dog gatesI've been looking for a stair gate to help separate/contain the dogs on occasions, googled "dog gate" and came across this.

It's the only time I've ever heard of anything like this but am now having a very serious rethink regarding the use of stair gates

Wow, no gates for me - thank goodness I havea bungalow but I won't use them even to lkeep dogs in one area. That is just awful!

Tis a hard one - I have a dog gate to stop my dog accessing my front door as local by-laws mean I am not allowed to fence in my front garden so do I risk a freak accident or more likely accident when my dogs sneak out when the front door is opened?
It is a risk assess, emt everyone has to make although you can (as I have had previously for my late sick weim) have a gate made of a solid material which means your dogs can't get caught up in it.
My gate is not fixed so solidly to the door that the deerhound can't displace it - I would need to screw it in to ensure security but for me I use it and also train that they are not supposed to jump at it. Brice and Freddy both do or have done agility and are more than capable of clearing it (as would Chase although untrained) but they see little reason to test it even when there is a knock on the door as they get no reward in the hall.

I can see that. I'm lucky I have a vestibule too so my dogs are never near the front door, and there is a fence and snap gate on the front garden too. My GWP is trained not to rush the door but I'm not so confident with Allez as he just LOVES visitors

I think it is worth noting that this story relates to a dog which was left unattended. I think I would still feel comfortable using a gate if somebody was at home with Tegen an Remi but will have a serious think about leaving them alone with a gate in use.
I hadn't thought about having a solid gate Sue. I'm sure I could think of a way of blanking the bars. Ta

A piece of hardboard or ply wood on either side with a couple of bolts to hold them in place should do the job cheaply.

I was thinking hardboard and pop rivets (with washers)
