Success!!

Today Monet retreived straight to hand - i threw the dummy out, he did his i can't be bothered to get that and ran straight passed it, so i ignored him and waited, and waited and waited - then he did it.  He came running back to me with his find and put it straight in my hands... trouble was it was a blackbird  Surprised  The bird was UNHARMED and after a few minutes it flew off - So what do i do about that?  Sallie

I guess it depends what you are looking for Laughing .

If he rarely bothers with his dummy then I would praise the gentle delivery of the blackbird to the hilt and make his dummy more interesting by the addition of fur or feather, or by making the retrieve harder. I have been guilty of making retrieving no challenge by just throwing a simple seen retrieve. After being told off Wink  I now do most (not all) of the boys retrieves as memory retrieves and they much prefer having to work that bit harder. With Chase I am working on delivery to hand in a very boring area but with very high reward, no delivery to hand = no chicken wing, even if he drops it at my feet it is not good enough for this exercise. Direction training etc is taught separately and I am not cueing a delivery to hand although if he looks as though he is going to I get ready and praise him highly. He is not quite ready to consistently string the whole retrieve together yet.

If Monet normally retrieves the dummy then I would just thank gently and send him back for the dummy.

I would be thrilled that he brought the bird back unharmed and was keen to give you his prize, something to work with positively.

I did praise him - but wasn't sure that this was the right thing to do as i didn't send him out for the bird - but i thought something was better than nothing!!

Don't let Monet see our Rosie - her speciality is killing blackbirds and thrushes  Evil or Very Mad She's even been known to dive into the hedge when walking past (on the lead) and come out with one freshly killed blackbird  Evil or Very Mad  Evil or Very Mad

Breaks my heart when I see the little murderess at work.
