THE BIG SNOW

Just a note to say we Downunder hope you Upnover are not putting up with any hardship in the big snowstorm.
We are getting coverage in the newspapers and on TV of London shut down, so those of you further north must be worse!

Here in Nz (and is Aussie too) we are battling heatwaves and bushfires are getting all too common. Somehow I would rather have the cold than the heat - not that there is much of a choice between freezing or baking!

Where I live, we presently have a short respite from continual 30 degrees plus for the last fortnight and there has been several small local fires. Each time we hear the fire alarm go off we get nervous - at least the neighbour next door has a swimming pool and has told us in the event of a big fire, they have given permission for their pool to be used for the helicopter monsoon buckets.

Our Brittany's are well used to the heat and seek the shady spots early on.They follow the shadows around each day too. We have put large bins full of water in their runs so they can dive in for a soak if they get too hot.
Lou (our sheepdog) is black all over, so she especially likes to sit in the water - until Sophie joins in then it is all on for a game and water goes everywhere! Kip and Spice are more lady-like, with just a quick dip.

Take care everyone!

Thanks but for many it is not too bad.

I do think we as a country suffer more cos we don't get bad weather often enough to make it wortwhile investing in a good infrastructure to cope. So we end up muddling along and looking rather pathetic Embarassed  Embarassed .

Part of the problem here is Health and Safety has gone mad.  It is ridiculous - they never closed the schools when I was a child and we had, in general, much worse winters.

Makes you wonder how any of us managed to survive long enough to become 'Senior Citizens'

Well another grumpy old lady agrees.  Kids are mollycoddled these days.  Did none of you ever get to dig up the hot wet sticky tar blobs from the road, sitting on the pavement; climb trees, getting scraped breeks and legs, splash about in all the puddles in your wellies and clamber through snow drifts to get to and from school - four times a day, too, as we came home for dinner (not lunch in those days, well not here anyway).  Rarely got school dinners - tried them on occasion after a great deal of pleading and they were disgusting. As a result I hate semolina!
Snow not too bad up here, just enough to play in and still get about.
Patricia

No snow in Suffolk, it soon disappeared making way for rain Crying or Very sad I would rather nice freezing weather and the dogs might not be so dirty galloping in the fields...
Ditto Anne, we used to get to do allsorts when kids! Now they just sit on their bum watching TV or texting!
Alan hates semolina or tapioca or evn lumpy custard since schoold days. I love Semolina and rice puddings. My Mum used to make it with milk and butter and it is lovely Very Happy

Ok, another thread looms - what did you hate about school dinners - or foods you think are disgusting - nothing whatsoever in any shape of form having anything at all relating to the dogs.  Just for fun! Wink  Laughing  Laughing

snow

Not relating to the snow this year, but I do remember as a child of about 11 (in the 60's) living in Stafford and being REALLY snowed in. There were drifts of about 3', upto my waist and beyond and Dad having to try and help everyone else on the estate dig our way out to the main road, about 1/4 mile away.  Think they all gave up in the end and we had endless days of fun and not much food, but hey, we enjoyed it.  Haven't seen the likes of it since.
Victoria

We would hold our breathes and pray that the snow would get to three inches at home then the hills between us and the school would be impassable and we would yahoooooo get the day at home...
