I managed to talk to the bloke in question. His name is Tony Brazier and a quick google of his name shows that he has judged a fair few retriever trials, assuming it is the same person. This assumption appears to be supported by the conversation I had with him during which he said that he thought it would be a while before any Gundog Club courses would be up and running. I rather got the impression, although it wasn't actually stated, that his courses would be aimed more at retrievers and spaniels. If you want to speak to him yourself I would be happy to send you his number.
There is a course, which started on 22/3/08, at Brixworth in Northant's. I don't know if this would be too basic for you as I was told that the only prerequisite for this course was good recall. It's a bit further than a quick run up the A1198 too.
