Travelling and the Scalibor collar.For those who are off to Sunny France...don't forget the risks attached to sand flies, and other horrible diseases over there your Brittanys may catch. Having heard from a vet that Advantix was enough, I would say No. Dose all your dogs before going, Scalibor collar 2 to 3 weeks before travelling. Also don't let them swim with it.
One thing I never understood is why the governement did not make it compulsary to advise to treat the dogs before travelling, therefore having greater coverage.
Near Bordeaux should be very hot, especially for the Black dogs.

I have spoken to three vets over this question - two on the continent and one in England. All say for the short time we are in France Advantix is quite adequate. The collar lasts a long time - nearly all of which it won't be on the dog.
Having said that - what is more important is one is happy with the treatment - so if think Scalibor is good - use it.
FWIW mine will have Advantix which is going on next week so that when they are treated to return to UK we won't be putting Frontline over fortnight old Advantix
Heat - that will be interesting - I have been purposely working mine in the heat (when we had some) with a view to getting them acclimatised.
Another thought - we are treating to repel the ravages of certain sandflies - but these can be found in parks and ornamental gardens just as well as by the sea. The treatment is to repel before they bite not protect the dog once the insect has bitten.

Mine have Scalibor collars for the UK anyway so Chase will be having his on any day now (I knew I was doing the water day yesterday hence it not being on already). I discussed with my vet in detail so a few weeks ago Chase had Advantix, then as that wears off he will get the Scalibor and he can have single dose of Frontline and Drontal on top of the collar, although I would do not keep dosing him in strong chemicals so Scalibor will remain as his Tick treatment for the rest of the british summer.
He also has his Swampcooler coat all primed and ready to help keep him cool. Also looking at borrowing a cool mat for his crate and we have plenty of reflective sheeting for the car (plus air con).

Apart from the distance from here, which I won't put my dogs through, these are even more reasons why I won't ever take them abroad - I could not be bothered with all that hassle and I won't put all those drugs into my dogs. Good luck to anyone who does.

Mine would be having the treatments anyway (and those not going abroad are anyway) as we have problems with ticks here. I have just made sure I have got my timings right so I don't bombard with too many chemicals together.
Having seen a friend lose a dog to a tick borne disease I treat whether abroad or not.
With regard to insect borne illnesses - with changing climate we are getting more and more diseases gradually making their way here (nothing to do with Pet Passported animals) and certainly I personally won't take chances with my dogs health.

I don't think I take chances with mine either. They are frontline/spot on'ed which covers most things, and jabbed once a year. Not much problem with ticks here, hope none of those weird beasties come up here.

You will never know what can crop up even in the UK! Look at the blue tongue which drifted from the Med...Complete headache for the livestock farmers, but better safe than sorry...
I go and show abroad- I started when the passport came out- with Lorca. I usually go North, and at the end of the year when farm work is finished. But, even going to Rion, (not too far from this year's French show), showing at the Nationale is a real opportunity to compete against the best of the best.
Toscane went BIS that year against 255 dogs, she had her Scalibor collar, she was frontlined at the show before going against the Champion classes. The only thing, she drooled after the drontal pill given at the show. 
I would never put my dogs 's health in jeopardy and this is why I thought I would post about the necessary precautions.

I remember the drooling Patricia  It didn't do her any harm when she go into the ring though
