Above is a link from the "sporting countryside" forum which may be of interest to those of you exercising dogs in the Essex and Herts border area
guy

cross posted from above

I have hopefully passed this information on to the right people, but need you all to understand that if this can happen here it can happen anywhere. If you have Defra email could you pass this mail to them as well.

In the Essex and Herts border villages of Elmdon and Chrishall which is close to the Wood green cattery a subsidiary of the Wood green shelters, Six dogs have died and two have survived, and several foxes which were found dead in the open of some form of Poison . Chrishall Parish Council have placed warning notices up asking people to keep all dogs on a lead. This all appeared to be when the dog walkers were walking along public footpaths.

The Government's Science Laboratory is analysing samples from the post mortems to see if they can discover this mystery poison, and establish the source and hopefully the farmers or landowners who have laid this down.

Anyway more information can be obtained by e-mailing Pam Jenner at editorial@saffronwaldenweeklynews.co.uk or if anyone suspects poisoning should contact Natural England on 0800 321600.

Or of course the Governments central Science laboratory I don't have a number for them but I am sure this can be found.

Two of the dogs that died were a Black Labrador called Jasper owned by Lucy Lewis, and a nine month old Puppy belonging to one of Lucy's friends. Jasper was just three years old.

The early signs are; Confusion, Full?epileptic fits, Loss of sight and foaming at the mouth. They had only the chance to get to a Vet, but died the next morning.

?Mrs Lewis collected several carcasses of Rabbits and discovered several foxes lying? dead in the Open ground for no apparent reason!

It is an offence to put down any poisons indiscriminately, as this could be a danger to children as well.

Cats have also been poisoned as well as these dogs and this has been recurring since November when Jasper died, then just six days later the 9 month old Pup.

So please do warn as many people as you can and cross-post to all.

I ask the Editor of Our Dogs to e-mail Pam Jenner on editorial@saffronwaldenweeklynews.co.uk for further information.

I do hope that everyone else can keep there dogs safe and of course cats as well. The wildlife effected is being kept a watch of and even though this is serious they will catch the offenders with our help.

Meanwhile thankfully I cant get onto that area, because of the difficulty?I have in walking,?but it was a favourite of mine for walking on, and I sincerely hope this will be cleared soon.

The two dogs were in the November time and since then this has continued so we cannot appear complacent, plus this area is a favourite for ramblers!

Thanks Guy.  I couldn't get into the site in Johns' post, expect I was doing something wrong.

This is absolutely horrifying.  As you say, if it happened there it can happen anywhere.  To lose a dog is heartbreaking under any circumstances but to lose one due to indiscriminate poison baiting leaves me at a loss for words.

Hopefully the culprits will be tracked down and suitably dealt with for this crime.

Flipping heck..that is only up the road from me about 4 mile. Thank goodness I have the farm to walk and train on and don't need to go up there.
