Hi all,
Today while walking the dogs down by the river, Mabeleen went on point and suddenly she was yellping. She had disterbed a wasps nest. The wasps came poaring out and chased me and the dogs accross a field of barley. I just couldn't get rid of them and was stung many times. Once I had got far enough away they went away. On the way home one of my welsh springer went down sick with the stings, I carred her to the van and we went home.
When I got home Mabeleen looked like she had been 10 rounds with Joe Frazier, for she must have been stung about 20 times.
I have given them both antihistamine tabs and they seem ok but has anyone any iders what I can put on them.
By the way the stings haven't effected Mabeleen's apetite?

Piriton will be the best - if she can tolerate ice-packs for a time then it could be worth trying them on any really swollen areas as it will reduce pain and local swelling. Then just a case of keeping an eye on the stings and treating any local infections as and when - not really much you can do topically for all of them.

Hope she is feeling better soon, my weim and my WSS both did similar and after a day of so of hives they were fine.

Oh poor you and poor dogs! Do hope you are feeling better now. We once had a similar experience with a swarm of bees many years ago when we had our other dog. I was throwing my clothes off as we ran back to our caravan - not a pretty sight!! It is not just the stings that affect us - it is also a horrible shock as well. You can use something called waspeze on humans - probably would be OK for the dogs too. I agree with Sue regarding Piriton.

The main thing is none of the dogs got stung in the mouth or throat as in this case the swelling can be fatal as it blocks the airways. Ice can help then or even ice cream.

Oh, you poor things. I've been thinking of getting a bee hive and it's the one thing that outs me off. But I've been told they aren't aggressive like wasps. Apparently it's because the wasp stings and removes the sting to be re-used whereas if a bee stings it leaves the sting in and dies.

Thanks for your replys, Mabeleen and one of my Welsh were very quite for a couple of days (I know a Brit quiet) I didn't take them out walking nor did I go myself as I felt worse. In the end I had 2 stings on my back 2 on my head 1 on my bum but the worse was my right hand, I didn't know at the time but I had 5 stings on my hand and ended up at the doc's. I just had no sleep for 2 days and I have never known pain like it. I could not work until today but its slowly getting better now.

I did the ice on the dogs and me it did help.

Horrible insects. Alan went and found a nest in the meadow and sorted it out. Same, it seems to attact the dogs, Athos has been stung by one but just a swollen muzzle.

Meant to add earlier .... Homeopathic Apis Mel 6c given immediately 1 pillule then hourly for the next 4 hours then four times a day if needed helped Freddy when he was stung after putting his clumsy welsh foot in a wasps nest Shocked

. Apis is derived from bee sting but seemed to help Freddy too with what were definitely wasps.

I am totally sceptical about homeopathy having a 'conventional' health background BUT whenever I have tried stuff on the dogs it has seemed to help and certainly hasn't hindered.

Glad the ice helped Gill and hope any lingering problems soon resolve.

Thanks all for your lovely advice and kind words, we are all better now, except Mabeleen still had a bit of a small eye at Leeds on Saturday. No one noticed including the judge.
The group judge did his usual and made me feel invisable. I stayed in my van on the show ground the night before as I usual do, but this time I had both the Mabeleen and my Setter dog. Mabaleen tryed to strangle me as she didn't want the Setter near me and sleeping with him was like sleeping with a huge spider Ha Ha. Still they both won so I went home very tired and happy!
