Food for thought:

Just sitting here, looking at our girls and it set me wondering. What is it about dogs that makes us love them so much?

Even when they are naughty, just one little look and I cannot stay cross for long. It is so rare for me to stay cross with them, they are really surprised if I do.

There are many kinds of animals in the world. Why is it dogs with whom we have this special relationship? Whatever is wrong with people who do not love them?

I think cos they give their love and support so unconditionally.

While my sister was dying Brice and Freddy gave me purpose and so much love. While I was ill last year all my boys were super .......... and yesterday I needed a further biopsy and despite hosp appt and work and beating getting in the way I have had so many cuddles from Chase and Brice (I excuse Piper as he just isn't that type of 'pet') - they know I can't wait to get the results next week (also dread them) and they are so loving. At the moment Chase is squishing my foot mind you and may well be cursed when I get up from the sofa and fall over Laughing

Seriously, I can accept people are not animal lovers but I can NEVER accept people being cruel to animals.

Dogs are frank and honest... they are totally accepting of us...they have a sensitivity many people cannot manage...their form is pleasing to our eye...they are warm, responsive and forgiving (except when we miss an easy bird)...their presence makes us feel safe...their association with mankind spans millenia...a symbiotic relationship which has endured...

Which all reminds me of an old joke...
A guy has his dog's tail removed by the vet...his mate asked him 'what the blazes did you do that for?'. He replied, 'well the mother-in-law' is visiting next week and I don't want anyone to look pleased to see her'.

My love affair with dogs started at a very early age. As any only child,l my constant companion and best friend was my collie, Jill. She died when I was 7 years old and that is my first memory of true unhappiness.

When I was 13 another wonderful collie came into my life. Her name was Lassie (not very original) but she was a truly unique dog. She slept on my bed and went everywhere with me except to school. We lived a couple of miles froim the village and I would cycle to the various activities and she would run along behind on the footpath. She never needed a lead. When I was at church choir practice or youth club she sat outside. She was never tied and she never left her post. When I grew up and had my children she loved them too. The other day I found a poem I had written about her when I was 15. I am not ashamed to confess the memories it brought back brought a tear to my eye.

I think it is what our dogs give us that makes us love them so. Unstinting love and loyalty, no criticism and that uncanny sense of somehow knowing when things are going badly for us. When we feel low, one of the most therapeutic things is to go off and take a dog for a walk somewhere quiet.

What would we do without them?

I agree Gay with all those feelings...I had similar experiences with my first dog( by she was a Brittany and that is why I would not have any other breed)...She cheered me up when we moved back to Paris -which I hated with a vengeance- she helped me sneak to see my boyfriends, she came to pick me up from school, I would never go anywhere without her. Even when some of my family did not like dogs.
As for now, to have 6 on the bed would be excessive, and they get filthy on the farm. They come and have a cuddle on the settee and play games. I could not have the latest addition left to her own devices as she raids the garlic, my potatoes, and jumps on the back of the chair ro hunt and kill flies Rolling Eyes

I doubt that one would be restful on the bed..and she licks you to death... but I blame her dad Cool
