Would you be interested??As some of you know I use Clicker Training, more with my non-Brittanys but Mugi is not bad and now Chase is learning self-control he is working better with a clicker.
I do not believe clicker training is the only way, nor is it necessarily the right way but I do believe it has a place in helping build strong and consistent foundations. I have done two levels of a Competency Programme to train clicker trainers and received Distinction in both (not boasting just giving some background) and I have completed a weeks course as a participant (with Mugi) applying the clicker to gundog work.
I am more than happy to share this knowledge at the Oct weekend in the form of a demo of how you can apply a clicker to HPR gundog work and I have a plan in my mind of what I can do, something using three dogs to show how a behaviour can be started, how to move it on and finally how it can be applied to a working situation.
If I am to do this with any relevance I will need to start training fairly soon as clicker does not mean quicker in all cases and I would look to use my time in hospital (first few days I will be well but bored) to plan my training.
So could you give me some idea if this would be something that would interest, I am very happy to do it but I don't want to expend my time setting up a demo situation and part training three dogs if no-one is interested. My one dog will be trained for one discipline this way anyway cos I think it would help him but to get him to the point of a finished (or nearly there) behaviour needs planning.
I will not mind either way if you don't want it, just would rather know sooner than after working on it .

Yes yes yes.
I am organising the TAN day - cannot say for my sins as i volunteered. How long do you need for a demo, could you do it twice? Some people will be involved in other things so would not be able to be in two places at once.
~Inside or outside.
Could I request 'clicker trained recall' and 'clicker trained heel'

Ok then Guy, how about an indoor session in the morning doing a demo of recall and heel work (no pressure there then ) - possibly with Chase but if he has improved significantly I may see if I can borrow a young dog who has no idea what I would be doing.
In the afternoon I could do a demo of an application to gundog work using Freddy, Mugi and Chase to stage the development of the activity.
As for timings - can I get back to you on that? I would not have time to go into the theory of the clicker, I am producing a leaflet on the for John Hod at the mo which would be available hopefully as a handout, anyone wanting more info could always chat to me after the sessions.
Does that sound ok to you in principle???

Sounds interesting, Sue. I could possibly volunteer a young dog who hasn't got a clue what you're doing
Certainly I've got no idea how clicker training works. The more I hear about it the more confused I get

I'd love to see it. Never really associated clicker training with working training for gundogs until you spoke of it. I've only ever thought of it in terms of obedience before.

Expanding my plans while in hosp and after discussion with John A I am planning the following if it suits everyone.
A more pet based demo of two methods of leadwork/heelwork. One is to start off pups and for those that know Chase on a lead NO I DIDN'T USE IT , various reasons mainly related to being in a plaster cast when I first got Chase. I have however used the method successfully with Mugi who didn't walk well initially and also with my Deerhound as a pup. The other method uses a technique to encourage the dog to manage itself in the presence of temptation, it can be used with an older dog well. I have decided not to do recall as however I thought it through I decided it was actually too similar to normal recall at the beginning and then where it differs would take too much time to cover properly. This demo could be done indoor or outdoor and can be fitted in the programme whenever as long as I got a bit of floor space . Weather permitting the tennis court could be a very good option. Timing for this session can be flexible to fit in the programme but say half an hour to an hour in the morning.
My second demo would be working focussed and I have already started training up the dog who will be doing the complex final stage - at the moment it is going to plan and if it goes wrong before October, hey if I don't give you too many clues ahead of time you will never know . That will have to be outdoors and will need a reasonable bit of space and access for my car to be close enough for me to swop dogs without it getting too disrupted. I am estimating about an hour for the whole of it but it could be split into three 20 min sessions if that fitted the programme better.
