just a thoght iam having a freinds dog shortly. while he goes on holiday she wanders off ignores a whistle but comes back on about the fifth call. is it worth me going back to basic trainig or is at nearly 9 years leave her to be herself
I would have a go. Even at 9 years she will learn. She might take it better from you than her owner anyway, so you could have quite a bit of success. You will keep us up to speed on how she gets on though won't you?. And look at Barney Rubble at 7 years old - Guy's having a lot of success with him. Of course, who knows what will happen when they return to their owners. Let's hope it becomes so ingrained that it is permanent. Good luck. _________________ Annie
Handle every situation like a dog, if you can't eat it or play with it, just pee on it and walk away
Steve it is always worth going back to basics - think of training as going up a spiral staircase, you keep going over the same ground but each time at a higher level.
if the dog is coming on the fifth call it has learned to ignore the earlier ones. It is like someone nagging at you - you think ' whatever - I will just finish this and then listen as there will be a repeat'.)
You have a great opportunity to make some changes to this as the dog will be on new ground and with a new handler so unsure of how you will react. So make the command once and then make sure you enforce it without a repeat of the command (unless the dog physically might not have heard)
i would put said od on a long line (piece of sash cord or electrical flex of no more than 10 metres and 5 would do. you can recall and if the dog ignores this you have a link.
Good luck. _________________ Guy, Ellie, Topaz, Catja and in memory Barley
