Give the lad a break - he is four months old - let him be a puppy!  Retrieving has to be fun.  If you are not careful you will loose what you have got.

Is it a play growl or a 'get off my bone' growl?  My guess is (without seeing hte dog) that it is a play growl.  So the odds are in your favour.  Keep the enthusiasm - growling and bouncing about - he's loving it.  

At 4 months life is not serious.
