Sorry Alibindahouse, - this month's topic is 'pointing'. Perhaps next month we should do 'show' or 'portrait' ? open to suggestions. _________________ Guy, Ellie, Topaz, Catja and in memory Barley

He decided that I was not letting him hunt, so he has self trained.
Yesterday he caught a total of 3 birds to bring to me, so I guess I can say he is awake to birds now....it is spring so time to work dogs.
Who ever gets him will love his retrieving and sweet disposition...not a show dog but one hell of a bird dog 10 mo.s _________________ Goldie Coats

I have no idea why - but I cannot get a picture to show in the previous post so have copied and pasted it Guy.

@wyngold..ooohooohh ...youre in trouble......
You are learning youre dog very wrong hunting skills.....
he has to "point"and after its shot then to retriev it.....and not to "find and kill it " it will kost you a lot of time and skill to get him to point without "flushing" and to retriev without killing/crushing a wounded animal
......
better to use the dummy to ghide and stimulate the dog.....and train him playfull _________________ ad fundum; bottums up
Yes very well know this...
But since it is not game for me it is a non issue.
He was slow to awake, so not that I know he is awake
now comes formal lessions.
But there is also a counter mechanism at work.
A dog with high prey drive and high retrieve will always be a bit more
resistant to get steady. But with this kind of drive for me...it is much easier to do training as the dog can be easily pumped up with a retrieve when it starts to let down from the control required in training.
I do not use dummies to train steadiness with...I always use live birds,
a launcher, or toss birds to teach stop to flush, after that I then teach
steadiness after the point. Two seperate exercises eventualy brought together for the complete action. Basically "chaining" behaviors together.
So I do reverse "chaining" when teaching dogs. Teach the final action first, then back chain to the start of behavior.
1) Retrieve
2) Stand Stay with shot
3) Stop to Flush ( check cording dog and toss a bird) teach the dog to stop every timne a bird is put into air
4) Stand/Shot/ Toss bird
5) Check cord into Point
We are not required to teach a flush command in the USA but much easier to do after the dog has learned the stop to flush. Then you can teach the coule and when the bird is put into air it stops from the learned interaction. Very simple to do...
French dogs are a little less prey driven than many American dogs so they are much easier to get steady, and in fact are much softer in some cases and so letting them get away with things in the puppy stages is not too bad so long as I am not associated with the action. I do not encourage them to hunt robins or Black birds it is a game they do on thier own when I am not around, but I do thank them when anything is brought to me, and I do remove it. No one eats what they catch if I can help it. _________________ Goldie Coats

Pegging is an eliminating fault in the UK Field Trials. I do not allow my dogs to catch birds unless shot. _________________ Annie
Handle every situation like a dog, if you can't eat it or play with it, just pee on it and walk away
Well, they didn't exactly peg them Retrieved runners to hand, alive and kicking. All three Brits - now if that had been Hester I'd be duckless _________________ Annie

For me - pegging is a dog catching live game that is not wounded or damaged or ill but that has not been able to get away from the dog - either by virtue of the speed of the dogs approach or because it's exit is obstructed.
in my book your ducks were pegged - the fact they were brought to hand is a different thing.
