I stand corrected! Laughing   I was told (some years ago I admit - perhaps around 25 - when we first got Brittanys, and it was a Labrador man) that a bird pegged is an unshot but dead bird when brought to hand.  My  mistake.

Goldie is not the only one whose dogs( or rather pup in her case) catch little birds. And it is not such a big deal really Confused
Toscane has been known to catch a low flying small bird in the air...who was swooping low...And her grand mother grabbed a bird from the nest in the hedges. Which all Brittanys will check out up and down...Also found a swift which the old girl pointed on the ground. Rolling Eyes  As you know Swifts don't go on the floor as they have very short legs and huge wings. So, Jan-the dog- saved it that day, I picked it up, it pinched me with its beak and flew away Wink

Rosie will catch blackbirds - either on the wing or will dive into the hedge and come out with them Sad

We are oft times guilty of underestimating the Breton!!!  Dionee did her net patrols on the vineyard over birdscaring...she was catching birds and bringing them to me.   She knows exactly the difference between a quail and a pheasant to those birds worrying the grapes...I was told never, ever to allow my dogs to hunt rabbits and hares...they know the difference!!!!  I help them learn about digging up stops (closed but in use rabbit holes). They know what you're after...!!!!   As the true versatile dog, we can expect no less of them!!

Josh, my first Brit, was such an instictive hunter.  Baby blackbirds to hand (undamaged and released) Rabbits (including a friends pet (they were warned but insisted rabbit knew where to escape from their dogs  Rolling Eyes  It died of shock on the way to vet  Embarassed  Embarassed  Wild rabbits brought to hand whilst chatting to local baptist minister  Embarassed  who laughed and said his dog did exactly the same  Laughing
