MacLachlan is my Scottish side from my maternal grandmother: the good air of the colony must have been bracing for there were fourteen children born seven sons and seven daughters...!! my grandmother's mother Kate being the second to youngest. Strict Methodists of course although I have heard tales of the 'wee beastie' creating the odd moment!!!! as it does, as it does Laughing (How did those women manage!). I can tell you Annie, I wear my ancient MacLachlan tartan with great pride because although we are generations from the homelands these are the people that made this country...what would they think of aspects of it now...I am ashamed to think!

John and I went climbing in Glencoe and I found it very, very eerie. I found my skin crawling. I hadn't realised it would affect me, and John couldn't understand as he was English(a West Country lad).
We spent a week climbing in Skye another time and went to the Glencoe Exhibiton at Dunvegan Castle - as we got to the central area where there were artefacts laid out John just caught me as I suddenly passed out. - Absolutely no idea why - I was perfectly fit and well and was not in need of food. No logical explanation other than emotion - weird! Confused

Brittany Spaniel was the obvious easy translation of Epagneul Breton, however an epagneul is not a flushing dog but a pointing dog and as such is in a different group under the FCI To seek to avoid confusion the spaniel part of the name was dropped.

Having said that my vet managed to put 'Brittany Spaniel' on the pet passports. Rolling Eyes

Seeking to make the name more logical will open a whole can of worms about which others will be better placed to comment.

Some years ago the Brittany Club of Great Britain sought a change of name from the Kennel Club. This was refused, so was pursued by the Club, and after a few letters to and fro the KC slapped a 5 year moratorium on us. This expires in September but the matter has not been discussed as yet. My view is that we should seek to rename as 'Breton' to avoid confusion with the American Brittany Spaniel.(That country has done the same with the Epagneul Breton as they did with the English Cocker)

Down here, the breed is recognised by the NZKC as "Brittany" so it is frustrating to see "Brittany Spaniel" often in their paperwork and the gazette (a monthly magazine published by them).
I have corrected show secretaries putting "spaniel" on the challenge Certificates and judging schedules . Even the gundog trial people get it wrong too!
WHEN our breed standard review is completed and the new one publically released, I propose to volunteer to be coordinator of a breed special feature in the magazine .My intention is to ONCE AND FOR ALL get the message out there in NZ that the word spaniel has been dropped.
I can just see the headline now......

WHEN IS A SPANIEL NOT A SPANIEL----WHEN ITS A BRITTANY!!

All contibutions will be gratefully received folks - watch this space!!
