I'd like to see them, Sue. When you say a safe environment do you mean they are all on muzzles?  Or do you mean that there are enough adults with protective gear to get in and separate any problems before they become fights?

Sue, I'd like to see them too as that subject fascinates me...
Jessie having done courses on behaviour for her qualifications etc may put a diffrent side to how deal with nervous/ fear agressive dogs etc...Very good initiative on behalf of this trainer...how is the long term result?
Is it like a resocialising exercise? and do the dogs who have a problem lack the very early communication skills???
Look forward to reading your explanations and how Chase helps! Wink

Thank you for those, simply brilliant. He is really good to put up with all those dogs muzzled or otherwise troubled...
These  trainers must very experienced to tackle such dogs which leads to no doubt saving their lives in the long run. As no one wants a nasty dog. And trust them with others, be it humans or canines.
Good on you Chase... Wink

Well ............ no training and only crate rest since saturday so boy was he pleased to have a 30 min run today.

I was expecting something unmanageable and while he was pleased to be running he was as good as gold. Stop and Recall, 1 minute sit and a 5 min down. We did some heelwork off lead over a field where bunnies were running too so I was very pleased.

Even better his thigh hasn't swollen again and he seems sound Very Happy .

Today has been a long day ...........

Off to Surrey for 10am and Chase was - well shall we say just picture the breton recently off crate rest I was expecting and I got it in spades in a canine rehab class Embarassed . Brice only had a short time as Chase needed all the time today as his manners could have got him into all types of trouble. Absolutely thrilled though that the rather noisy tellings off he got had him stand up for himself VERBALLY but in no other way. He was so over-confident and wired so he was upsetting some of the dogs but while his manners could have been better the one dog he needed to respect in the groups he worked in - well he recognised the fact and showed due consideration for the old goldie who is nervous and snappy. (I have about 5 mins worth of video and will send you a copy when I burn it to disc Patricia as I know you like dog watching Wink ).

Not training but ... after 'class' both Brice and Chase had a photoshoot from the lady who runs the rehab as she is also a professional photographer. She somehow manages to capture the essence of the dog doing a lot of close up work so although I have a good camera and have taken some lovely shots I have had framed myself I thought it worthwhile to see if she can manage those really close shots I can't on my own. Brice found it really hard to deal with a camera in his face but Chase just posed ............. I am hoping for some nice photos.

On my way back from Surrey I stopped off at a friends for coffee and I was going to let the boys meet her two weims. However, she was dog-sitting a young Gordon Setter (fab doggy) and a newly rescued weim for a mutual friend and there was a lot of doggy tension so mine stayed safely outside. As the visit finished however the boys had cuddles ............. Thomas the young boy of the household has a syndrome and while absolutely lovely he is quite a challenge for the dogs although as he lives with weims and very sensible parents he is totally dog savvy. He adores Chase and Brice and bless the boys they do so well with him.

Finally home over 14hrs after we left home we have just sat through a massive firework display attached to the days ballooning festival, for the first time in almost 7 years I have not had to worry as the three boys have taken it all in their stride.

'Proper' training today in wet and blustery conditions.

All in all I was pleased as he had 6 runs and for the most part he was staying in very good contact with me. STOP had a few sticky moments Rolling Eyes  and TURN was interpreted as a wide sweep once or twice but the wind was awful as we could never seem to finish a run with the wind in one direction  Evil or Very Mad . Actually both dogs did well with the wind and were running according to how it was blowing but it looked very untidy and for someone like me I had to keep thinking if he was right so my handling was ragged.

By the end of his time out he was hitching his leg a bit but painwise it seems completely settled, certainly checking him this evening he has no heat in the thigh and although he is tired he is currently wrestling with Brice!

Super morning on a number of levels.

Two consecutive night shifts - something I never do normally as it kills me! Yesterday little one was so tolerant as I needed to at least attempt sleep so this morning I had promised him a run before I had a sleep.

We stopped off on the Cotswold Way on the journey home from work and out of the car he burst. We wandered from the car park with him pottering then we got to an area where the path was cut through an unharvested crop. He trotted nicely just ahead of me staying on the path and stopping when asked so he could be on lead to cross the road.

We ended up on the wide and mile long grass ride where I took Moo for our last walk, this is the first time I have been back and as I guessed there was evidence that the shoot that is adjacent was stocked up. Chase had a wonderful time scenting and hunting, he knew the birds were about but he wasn't allowed to drop down into the woodland to the pens ............ and he behaved. We bumped into the keeper who had been watching apparently and he commented on how fast and responsive he was. He asked about how the breed works and said he thought they were quite stylish Laughing . Sadly no chance of an invite to work on this shoot, tis a very expensive and established shoot and not where one would take anything but a spaniel or lab Wink . The keeper normally asks people to keep their dogs on lead on the ride at this time of year but he said he was happy for Chase to stay free and said that he will tell his underkeeper in case we meet again (he thinks he is unlikely to meet another B&W spaniel looking think with no tail so we should be safely recognised Embarassed  Laughing ).

On our walk carried and we met a young black lab of 9 months, not a big deal except this dog was off lead and I had popped Chase on, Chase greeting the very bouncy male in a really relaxed and friendly manner - yippee.

Some obedience work then and we had reached 'turn back point'. As we turned to go back the mile and a half or so we were heading straight back into a fairly brisk wind. Chase quartered so nicely into wind the whole way, running fast and true and turning himself ....... should have had my whistle as it was an ideal opportunity to reinforce the turn whistle Rolling Eyes .

Final good point was when we arrived back at the picnic site, he walked back to the car to heel, off lead and even though he was dying to go and chase the bunnies we could smell and see .... but he didn't!

Very happy with 'The Brat' today Cool  Very Happy  Very Happy .

Well it has been quite eventful over the last few days.

Friday saw Chase 'beating' for the single time this year, he was superb and due to the nature of the bag all dogs were on lead all day so it was a socialisation and 'training' day. He walked well to heel, walked off lead to heel when appropriate and I was very pleased with him.

Saturday saw him at Brice's rehab class and he is doing so nicely, he is getting quite refined when greeting dogs that don't like him so he is provoking less negative reaction. Both trainers like him and are pleased I keep taking him when he really doesn't need to be there for himself.

Today he was at Dog Games and he as worked so hard. It has finally clicked that he has to do what is asked to get his reward and you can see him think 'damn no treats' when he gets it wrong. At the moment his game is running through a tunnel to recall so he has to make a conscious decision to enter the tunnel when he can see the person calling him above the tunnel ............ it sounds easy in print but for him easy would be to just recall not do the deviation into the tunnel. He loves going now, initially he didn't see the point but the trainers there can see how much he has blossomed and they also notice he is starting to be less 'bull in a china shop'.

Apart from general training for the rest of this week he is off to Lincs on Sunday to take part in a training group initiated by the HPR Forum and with Rory Major taking the training. We are looking forward to all aaspects of it bar the drive!!!!
