We have a training day on the 31st May that you could come to and ask questions etc. and see the dogs [hopefully] working.

People can be very quick to judge - there is nothing wrong in what you did, infact you were very sensible about a very difficult situation.  Try and get to the training day in October - i would like to meet another complete novice to swap notes with Very Happy

Ali, I only know of your actions from your posts - I thought your were most brave to confront your problems of the time in the way you did. Personally rather than decry your actions i applaud them.

I have to agree with you in some ways that the breed can appear to be cliquey - but this is only because of the networks members already have in place and the short times available at shows to 'talk'.  Over time you will be pleasantly surprised at how friendly these  same people become.

The training day is a great opportunity to build friendships with other owners - there is much more time to talk about the dogs and also share anecdotes.  My experience of this type of day is you will learn as much from your colleagues as from the trainer.  That is why they are such good value Very Happy

Ali, if you want you can come to the training day as an observer without a dog - just pay £5 for your lunch.  I would suggest you find a babysitter too.

Back to books, I like Michael Brander's 'The Rough Shooter's Dog", Martin Deeley's 'Advanced Gundog Training', Guy Wallace's 'The Versatile Gundog' and Paul Long's 'Training Pointing Dogs' (American but with some useful ideas).  I've also bough the Steve Kimberley book that Jan mentioned somewhere
