Hi Patricia, if I have understood you correctly, are you saying that there is a problem with microchipping and we should tattoo our dogs? rgdsGlynis & Fen

Glynis...After a lot of thought, it occured to me that the French are right to tattoo. Speaking to the lady in charge of the National register.
1) the tattoo is visible immediately. You ring the register and both owner and breeder are on the register.
2) You don't need a vet or scanner to see it.
3) it does not travel
4) it is painless and adults can be done. I have all mine done. My friend who has pups( and even microchipped because they are legally docked) had the pups tattoed. If they end up in a rescue centre, he will know immediately.
5) if you show in France they will read the tattoo. and you need the right scanner for the right chip!
I say, responsible breeders should have their pups identified. It may cost a bit more for the pup, but..it is worth it?
And shame on the rescue centres for not contacting breed clubs. Some do. And some insist on knowing where they go . But that is fine...

Many thanks for that advice Patricia, I think I will 'phone the register for advice.  As I have said, I would be heartbroken if I lost Fen when I could easily put in place something that identifies her straight away (tho' fingers crossed it will NEVER be used).  As ever your comments are really helpful: THANKYOU.  rgds Glynis & Fen

No probelms Glynis...It costs about £20 for an adult. For a pup it is £ 7 per pup in a litter. You either charge the owner extra for the tattoo or they have a form of transfer in name.
Mine travels all the way from near Fakenham somewhere, she comes with a colleague, loves the pups ( I saw her at SKC as she has Nova Scotias )shaves the inside ear with tiny clippers -as the pups are done at 6 weeks- cleans it, then the tattoo is applied with either green or black ink. The number for all Brittanys I believe starts with JZ. like sheep, the  last numbers will follow with a future litter.
Very simple, not expensive and I feel secure in the fact my pups are identified for ever.

Laughing The ear should stay dry for at least 7/10 days but tests have proven that even if the ink  it is washed of soon as a tattoo has been done the holes will still be full of ink and you could still read it, this however is not recommended and the surplus ink wares of quickly.Patricia likes the green ink Smile

Trouble is having a pup who decided to try drowning in a deerhound sized water bowl hence the dye everywhere!!

Well today Christine came with her colleague to duly tattoo my babies...
She is not too close but she is so good, I won't have anyone else!! Wink
And I think we may be on the same wave lenght! Confused
Though my pups will have to be microchipped too( no way they'll get lost now!) I very much prefer the tattoo.
Christine, if anyone is interested would be willing to talk on the tattoo at some future show and tattoo or/ and demonstrate there really is little to it.
Yes, I like Green and my pups now look like little" Incredible hulks"!!!
Also great to talk dogs with like minded people!!
